Comet Elenin disintegrated

L. Elenin / ISON-NM Observatory

Based on the first images of the comet Elenin after its exit from the conjunction with the Sun, we can tell what comet mostly disintegrated. Maybe we can still observe swarm of comet’s debris. On the left you can see possible position of this “cloud”. Brightness of this object does not exceed 18m, which means what now, magnitude of the comet is lower then predicted on 12m. Hopefully in the near future debris of the comet will be observed on a large telescopes, and perhaps we’ll see some details of this “cloud”. Currently the comet is very low above the horizon and I observed it in nautical twilight, but comet will quickly ascend on the Northern skies, but it’s further observations may be hampered by the full Moon….

Around Sept 10th STEREO-A showed the comet to be about magnitude 12.

Hello Francis. Weather on last night over NMSkies was good. Our observatory worked full night. I used MPC ephemerides. One unknown (not a star) source is marked, I think its debris of comet, and how you can see it very faint – 18.1m

I’ve been waking up, but the last two nights the observatory roof was closed. I tried three nights ago and the telescope could not slew to it before the observatory closed. Someone questioned you to keep the truth on this coment, saying this is a spacecraft with a tetrahedron shield……and say your photos are not good enough. Moreover, they say you are keeping the truth from the public ! Здравствуйте Алексей, конечно это опечатка. Я наблюдал комету в навигационные сумерки, но конечно это было ПЕРЕД восходом Солнца, на предутреннем небе. В Москве в это время было 16 часов дня. Я напишу в РИАН. Спасибо.

Leonid and kevin ¿what think the relationship between comets and CME? I’m not convinced, I think it’s just a coincidence. but I proposean experiment:

If comets really affect the sun, should cause in CME the minimum period the sun.

I also think it is a coincidence. I would like to see more data. I would like to see more Sungrazers+CMEs during low solar activity such as 2008-2009.

The Sungrazers without a CME are just as important in a long-term study.

Even if the disintegrating dust cloud is expanding at 20 meters/sec, after 50 days the dust cloud would only be 86400km in diameter. Comet Ellen is wimpy.

Crossing our orbit in a 2D diagram is not the same as intersecting our orbit. Pluto crosses the orbit of Neptune, but actually gets closer to Uranus than it does to Neptune.

this will not happen. This comet has been meant to bring earthquakes, three days of darkness, being driven by aliens etc none of which have transpired – if this is still being suggested on the net ignore it – this is the last thing that can be claimed.

Just to let you know that Francis Walsh has imaged Comet Elenin a couple of days ago, and his image analysis shows the comet is in 2 pieces, but definitely out there and moving on trajectory.

I have asked him if he can estimate the size of the pieces from the images.

From what I can see, there is little coma left, but the proximity of the rising Sun compromised image quality and analysis somewhat, but will no doubt improve over the coming days.

“Francis, this is parasitic charge, which drain after several exposures. For example, I have some problems. You can use “preflood” option in MaximDL to avoid this problem. I’m not use this option to save observing time, but start my observation run with “cleaning” exposures, which drain this fuzzy spots.”

Comet not recovered by any observers. Perhaps large telescopes will find it.

It seems to me Francis is a great and unique privileged guy. Dozens of astronomers (amateurs as well) are looking for traces of the comet and are not finding, either with equipment, or with instruments.

it happens every day as space dust but does not affect mankinds immediate well being.. Unlike most Hollywood movies, most of the astronomy community ( not NASA or the military) would be the first to sound the alarm if trouble were headed this way- . Mr Elenin……. we were able to point a telescope at where comet elenin should have been today 31 degrees above the horizon. The Moon did not help with picture quality . Looking at our picture we could see no sign of the comet or any debris but this may have been due to light pollution from the Moon. By our figures, the comet should have been in the central part of our image below. We will try again when the Moon is not effecting the picture. We thought you might be interested to see our picture below.

The trajectory of comet Elenin has been well-known since Feb/March. The comet disintegrating would have no notable effect on the trajectory. Comet Elenin did not become a sungrazing comet. Comet Elenin had nothing to do with solar activity much less sunspot 1302.

one source is not enough….. you are reading one guy talking about nonsense. Crosscheck facts and research what you are told…. Old saying, belive nothing of what you hear, and only 1/2 of what you see. - educate yourself before you start spreading bad information ( physics explains your first question ), or get taken for something bigger than just a bad rumor ( i.e. cure-all medicines, “secrets to lottery winning”, etc. ) taking your money.

I’m sorry that the comet you discovered probably no longer exists. I do hope that your discovery gets remembered as a comet that was well awaited and could have been potentially very bright as it came relatively close to the Earth. Hopefully, it will not be remembered with all these crazy references associated with it.

Something similar happened with short-period comet Biela in XIX-th century. Sorry, but detection by Jean-François not confirmed. I can’t clearly visible comet on his animation. And comet not detected by 2 meters telescope, two times, on Oct. 10 and 17.

The nucleus has disintegrated. The dust cloud (coma) can take months to fully disperse since it is expanding at perhaps 20 meters/sec. The comet has been near the limit of visibility in STEREO since Sept 10th. And let’s keep in mind that Sept 16th was more than a month ago.

The point is many people are confusing STEREO images of the healthy comet 45P/H-M-P for the barely-detected dust-remnant of comet Elenin.

my point Leo, is facts are confirmable. It is not that I do not believe information from one person, but taking only one point of view is unreasonable and dangerous, as a soldier and a firefighter i understand information needs to be backed up before actions are taken. it does not mean it’s bad info., but only one point of view. Perhaps the facts you state will prove to be true… but at this point the object we discuss are nearly 90 million miles away, only a few Km wide, and moving quickly. once more researchers come on board with the information, i would be more likely to believe it…. besides, there is nothing we could do to change any of it, except watch and wait.
And yes, science is wrong sometimes- but the way we find out is others speak their contentions and we come to a consenus that what was thought right, was not. Great minds not only think alike, but think together.
