Looks cool but why can’t Nasa release a longer lasting animation? I appreciate the effort it takes to put the images together but it would be nice to see Elenin flying through space for longer than a second.
Thanks for sharing the images
This animation represent 1 hour and 4 minutes of real time. After that STEREO-B roll to normal position.
I wrote about that earlier, see http://spaceobs.org/ru/2011/07/11/behind-spacecraft-rolls-to-observe-comet-elenin/
On October 8, 2011, Earth will pass through several streams of particles ejected over the past 200 years by Comet Giacobini-Zinner.
No, we can’t measure the comet nucleus, comet its very active now, and we can’t “see”nucleus directly. Orbit of comet Elenin never been dangerous for the Earth. And of course orbit remain absolutely not dangerous for us now.
On October, comet will be very low above horizon, before sunrise.
Hey, so this means the comet is now visible from Earth? I can pick out Jupiter easily so this object being closer and the coma being larger than Jupiter means we should be able to see it right? I’m in the sunniest place on earth which means it also has the clearest view of the night sky so I’d have a good chance of observing it. I now have an idea of where to start looking and direction of travel thanks to this stereo image. : )
No, outer coma larger than Jupiter, but it very, very faint. Now my comet visible from South hemisphere with binoculars.
Just select English language on top and right.
No any danger to us, read this blog and you will find answers on your question.
There is not much of a tail in part because most of the material coming off of the comet at this time is gas and not dust. If there was more dust the tail would be longer.
Also Keep in mind that the coma of a comet is very diffuse and is not a solid object for reflecting light.
Comet Elenin as seen by STEREO-B, and what we think is going to happen next…
If its insignificant like that how was it seen from so far away with heat…an 18 inch reflector scope..I see no heat here? only several million miles away? yet no heat? I see other way out there stars…If its so small how is it not being destroyed by the sun right now or by the sling shot action…I am not trying to add a conspiracy don’t get me wrong. There are a few things that don’t add up to me as being possible by laws of physics. Though I think these answers are unavailable due to lack of information on the comet like what it is actually made out of and how compressed/densely packed. I would find it hard to keep a stone together thats getting rocketed by the force of an aircraft carrier launch X50 when its coming around the sun.
The comet is offgassing and “only 10% of long-period comets survive more than 50 passages to small perihelion.”
(page 2 paragraph 3)
A typical comet like Elenin can be detected at the distance of Jupiter because even at that distance the coma (expanding tenuous dust atmosphere) is generally several thousand kilometers in diameter.
On 2010-Dec-11 Elenin was 4.28AU from the Earth with a 6.0″ coma. So the coma was already about 18,000km.
Man come on…Off gassing? Its next to the sun for crying out loud it should be on fire no matter what it is doing or what it is made out of…
Comets like this is not an explanation for “this” comet. We will be using Elenin for understanding and observation as it goes by so I am still led to believe we know very little about these visitors and less about this one. I do not know if an explanation can be provided that is plausible to me as to how an object of its size, its distance traveled, can survive a sling shot around the sun at that distance and not burn up/explode/or disintegrate into nothing. It will be seeing the surface temps mercury sees on avg of 440k at its closest approach to sun. Thats kind of pass would flash fry the world..Yet not a 2.5km comet?
A comet is made of dust, and gas. Only the near surface violates “burn off”. Some comets do not survive their perihelion passage.
Asteroid 1566 Icarus survives many close approaches to the Sun.
3200 Phaethon also comes very close to the Sun and may be an extinct comet.
I wonder if long-period comets ever re-accrete some of these violates as they approach aphelion. It’d be negligible, I’m sure, since the gravity of an average comet is so low. But over millions of years of orbits, it might prolong a comet’s lifespan by a bit.
Simply Fascinating..Thank You and Thank you Leonid Elenin! Your observations have sparked a revolution I think in Astronomy.
Thank you for all your hard work, my question is in three parts. At what point will you be able to measure accurately the size of the nucleus? Will you be able to tell if the nucleus is increasing in activity? Is there a possibility this may become a great comet?
1. We can’t measure it now.
2. Yes, comet fly toward the Sun, nucleus is heating and we see increased activity.
3. I think no, but this comet may be useful for our understanding of comets.
Hi! Thanks for your work and your disponibility.
?? : What do you thinks about the tree last alignements of Elenin with Sun and Earth. Are you able to say for sure that the next one won’t influence the Earth ? Japanese are already ” waiting for “The Big One”. Does Elenin may deal the question ?
?? : Elenin seems to have a lot of gaz. In a ranking of size and gaz about comets, what is Elenins places ?
My opinion about “alignments” you can find on this blog, sorry but I can’t write about that dozen times per day.
My comet is relative small for long periods comets. It already passed Earth orbit but we can’t see dust tail, I can’t ranking comets by amount of dust out gas. For example now we can observe another comet – C/2009 P1, this comet larger than my comet and now have two dust tails, very impressive. Unfortunately, C/2010 X1 not have so many dust.
If your comet does not have so much dust, then what are we seeing? Also, you were able to estimate the nucleus in December as being 4 – 5 km in diameter, but now you say that you cannot measure it… Why not? It is so much closer now! Where is the tail of your comet? Or does it not have one? Why is NASA so interested in your little comet, by actually spending millions on filming it, if it is not a great or significant comet? DO you understand why the public is so concerned in this instance? WE SMELL SOMETHING FISHY GOING ON< AND YOU ARE NOT HELPING!!!…..
I told what we can’t refine our estimates of comet nucleus size. My estimate about 2-4 km. Why not? Read my previous answers. NASA interested because it passed very close to STEREO-B spacecraft.
We see gas envelope, in the near future we can see ion tail.
We can not properly resolve the nucleus because it is covered by the brightest parts of the coma.
hopefully no big one happens for it will surely be blamed on Comet 2010X1 Elenin. The main thing I have been concerned about on the Sept25-27th alignment is the scattering of sunlight through dust particles. This could make for some interesting views in atmosphere. Like Sun dogs halos etc for three days. The only reason I’m concerned about that is due to religious implications. Also check The Virgo constellation on Sept 29th 2011 and match with Revelations 12 vs 1-5.
You are right, this is weird rumor.
what are the rounds things what i see at the picture are that planets there thousands of them the things that not lights
This is a stars.
You can see it now, with binocular ours small telescope.
Please describe to us what we are seeing in the picture, as nothing is tagged there. Is Elenin the red dot on the right hand side of the picture at the top? What is the red portion? Is it the nucleus in the coma we are seeing? Please, numerous others have asked you to point out the position of Elenin on the picture, but you have not answered them yet.
You can find comet on left side of image. This is large moving diffuse object. On right you can see bright (red) stars of Orion constellation.
We can’t see from STEREO-A, this bright object is Mercury.
Mercury is approaching the Milky Way in STEREO-A HI1:
it’s mercury at the top and star antares below
Elenin’s coma currently appears to consist of more gas than dust at this time. This is in part why the tail is so short.
Both Elenin and YU55 are harmless.
Yes, of course. Comet have magnitude about 9.5m
But Moon can make your observations more difficult at this time.
What was the time scale for this pic please?
Duration of this animation is 64 minutes.
What would you be doing for the past days if you didn’t discover this comet?
I not understand your question.
What is your favorite ice cream flavor?
Hm, just icecream in wafers.
Hi I live in Italy: do you know if it’s possible to see and at what time, the comet in these emisphere? I would like to see naked eyes, but we’ve also a Meade, maybe it could be better!.. Thank you for the replay
Do you already knows which is the albedo of your comet?
Typical albedo for comet nucleus is 0.04
Just so the readers know:
You can only measure the true albedo of a comet when it is not active. Elenin has been active since before it’s discovery.
What kind of scientific information can you gather from these images? In an earlier post you mentioned that you could use these to determine the composition of the comet, but I don’t understand how you can do that with just a few blurry pixels per frame. Are you able to do mass spectrometry on these images, or is there another method you can use that gives you clues about the composition?
Hello Leo, thanks for your public site, but I answer if it’s possible to get the 64 minutes animation in some way by the web. Make me smile this short and very poor animation… From Stereo satellite we can see solar activity for minutes without interruption, why for your comet just a few seconds? Strange, is it?
Why strange? STEREO-B roll to my comet for two hours each day, take dozen images and roll to original position. After that we will examine this images and we not needed in this animation, it created only for you.
You can find this information on STEREO site.
You will see it on October, at this time convert visible from South hemisphere.
Where is Elenin now? Are we getting some update photo’s today? I tried with my binoculars to locate Elenin last night, but it was too cloudy…will try tomorrow again…what is the shape of Elenin at this stage? Is it spherical? Thank you for your hard work on this site, we appreciate it!
It looks as fuzzy ball, coordinates you can find here http://mpcapp1.cfa.harvard.edu/cgi-bin/returnprepeph.cgi?d=c&o=CK10X010
